April 25, 2024 · Celebrated during the 8th Pan-African Malaria Conference in Kigali, Rwanda
World Malaria Day is celebrated annually on April 25th to raise awareness about the global burden of malaria and amplify efforts to combat the disease. Africa accounts for approximately 94% of global malaria cases and 95% of related deaths, yet global funding remains well below the US$8.3 billion needed annually to sustain existing malaria services.
The MIM Society 8th Pan-African Malaria Conference (PAMC) took place in Rwanda from April 21–27, 2024, coinciding with World Malaria Day. Drawing 2,109 participants, it brought together researchers, National Malaria Control Programme representatives, policymakers, implementers, and global partners to exchange evidence, align agendas, and coordinate action toward malaria eradication.
The conference underscored the urgent need for sustained investment in African-led research and for an Africa-based institution with pan-African legitimacy and global ties to lead the fight. MIM continues to champion this role — advocating for evidence-based policy, elevating African scientific voices, and building the next generation of malaria researchers.
World Malaria Day provides a strategic platform to renew commitment, celebrate progress, and acknowledge the tireless work of health professionals, researchers, and community workers fighting malaria every day.
